Rex Heathcote

About Rex

Rex resides in the fertile Tamar region of Northern Tasmania along the banks of the famous Tamar River.

Rex's Story

Over years of experience in Timber furniture and object design and manufacture, Rex developed and perfected his techniques of working with timber. In doing so he shares with us his passion for showing the beauty contained within the fine grain of the wood. Rex creates his pieces using the finest select Tasmanian timbers and veneers and draws inspirations from the story the tree tells in the growth rings and patterns of the timber. In the creation of Rex’s boxes, he uses a selection of some of Tasmania’s endemic timbers, including:

  • Myrtle, which is grown in the high countries, displaying very few growth rings and in colours ranging from rich reds, browns to almost orange pink tones.
  • Blackwood, grown in the far northwest wetland regions of Tasmania displaying shades from light golden to deep brown.
  • The slow growing, golden coloured Huon Pine, named the “Prince” of Tasmanian Timbers which can grow to an age of 3000 years or more.
  • And the truly majestic, highly prized Blackheart Sassafras. Varying in colour from light brown to subtle pink, its distinct growth rings create a striking striped pattern
